If you are looking for a ginger turmeric digestive tonic that is easy to prepare ahead, this recipe is a beautiful one to keep on hand. It is made the night before, left to steep overnight, and enjoyed the next morning as a simple daily tonic.
Prep time: 5 minutes
Steep time: Overnight
Total time: Overnight
Serves: 2 to 3
Best enjoyed: First thing in the morning, warm or at room temperature
Ingredients:
½ small knob fresh ginger, grated with skin on
½ small knob fresh turmeric, grated
½ lemon, thinly sliced with skin on
1 tsp apple cider vinegar
3 cups boiling water
Once cooled option to add Manuka honey to taste
Instructions:
The night before, put all of the ingredients except the water into a Jug or plunger (French press).
Add the boiling water.
Leave to sit on your kitchen counter overnight and enjoy first thing the next morning. (I like to
add hot water to drink) Transfer any leftover elixir into a bottle and store in the fridge. It should
last for 3 days.
Tips for the best flavour
Slice the lemon thinly so it infuses more easily.
Grate the ginger and turmeric fresh for the strongest flavour.
Add the honey only once the drink has cooled slightly.
If you prefer a milder tonic, top your serve with extra warm water before drinking.
How to serve it
This digestive tonic is best enjoyed:
first thing in the morning
slightly warm
before breakfast if that feels good for you
as a gentle alternative to a heavier morning drink
Storage
Store leftovers in a sealed glass jar or bottle in the fridge for up to 3 days. Give it a little shake or stir before serving, and add hot water if you would like to warm it through.
Simple swaps
Leave out the honey for a sharper, more tangy finish
Reduce the ginger for a gentler flavour
Add a little extra lemon if you like it brighter
Use a plunger or tea strainer if you want a smoother drink
